File Transcoding
Transcoding changes a media file’s container, codec, dimensions, or audio format. It can be created as a standalone task or run after a download task.

- Choose a local file, or click “Choose Library File.”
- Wait for XiaDown to inspect the file.
- Choose an available transcode preset, dimensions, container, and codec.
- Click Start.
The task appears under Library → Running, and its result goes into the corresponding Library file category.
Common choices
Section titled “Common choices”| Goal | Consider first |
|---|---|
| Improve video compatibility | MP4, H.264, and AAC. |
| Reduce video size on newer devices | An H.265 preset. |
| Web playback | A compatible MP4 or WebM preset. |
| General audio playback and sharing | MP3 or M4A. |
| Preserve lossless audio | FLAC. |
| Continue editing audio | WAV. |
The actual options depend on the input file and built-in presets. If you see “No transcode formats available,” first confirm that the file type is supported, then try another input file.
Transcode after downloading
Section titled “Transcode after downloading”Choose a transcode preset in Quick or Custom Mode when creating a download to continue processing after the download completes. Before enabling “Keep transcoded file only,” confirm that you do not need the original file.
Tool problems
Section titled “Tool problems”Transcoding requires FFmpeg, which is also used to merge some downloads. If a button is unavailable or a task fails to start, verify or reinstall FFmpeg under Settings → Download. See Dependencies for details.
